Embracing my origins and memories
Born three quarters of a century ago in the vibrant city of Baltimore, Maryland, my life has been a tapestry woven with experiences, relationships, and the pursuit of meaning. My father, an electrician of German descent, and my mother, who blended her German and Irish roots, instilled in me a rich heritage. My grandfather, George K.O. Chaney, was a renowned lightweight prizefighter in the 1920s, adding a layer of history to my family background. Growing up in a rowhouse neighborhood across from Herring Run Park felt like living in a nurturing cocoon, where I learned to navigate the complexities of adolescence and friendship.
The bonds that shaped my youth
As a teenager, I immersed myself in writing, poetry, and the simple joys of hanging out with friends at the local drugstore. The bustling streets of Northeast Baltimore were filled with fellow baby boomers, many of whom I still cherish as lifelong friends. Our tight-knit group, known for its unique culture, has weathered the test of time, gathering together after sixty years to reminisce and celebrate our shared past. These relationships are the true treasures of my life, far more valuable than the various homes and apartments I’ve occupied over the years.
Finding home in relationships
Throughout my journey, I have lived in numerous places, including Houston, Jacksonville, and Newark, Delaware. Each dwelling has been suitable and functional, yet it’s the people I share my life with that bring true meaning to the concept of home. Raising two sons during a chaotic yet fulfilling time in our four-bedroom house, we navigated life with a close friend, two dogs—one rescued from the streets—and a cat. The laughter, challenges, and love we shared under one roof created a sense of belonging that I hold dear.
Writing as a form of expression
Since my high school days, writing has been my outlet for exploring the profound moments of life. Initially, I believed that the thrill of falling in love was my greatest muse. However, as I matured, I discovered that genuine inspiration often comes from a deeper understanding of life itself—its intricacies, its beauty, and its challenges. My writing aims to capture those fleeting moments that define our existence, allowing readers to connect with the essence of my experiences.
The beauty of spontaneity
I have always had a fondness for spontaneity, appreciating its unpredictable nature. There is a raw honesty in spontaneous moments that often eludes us in our structured lives. I often reflect on two lines I penned that resonate with me:
- “Watching pleasure, mouthing pleasure, knowing the play was us, the season was short, running head-on, spontaneously, through leaves of contempt, from eyes that have no autumn.”
- “The end of his journey will be the subtlest of epiphanies – those small spontaneous glimpses, a nod from a stranger, moments of touch, words of awe, are the wisdom.”
These reflections remind me of the beauty found in the unplanned and the unexpected, encouraging me to embrace life with open arms.
Empathy in a challenging world
In an age where negativity often prevails, I strive to maintain an empathetic perspective towards life and the people I encounter. My career as a sales and retail consultant exposed me to both the best and worst of human interactions. I often feel disheartened by the injustices faced by children and the normalization of suffering in our society. Yet, I find hope in the resilience of those who stand up against ignorance and injustice, as witnessed in the recent protests across various cities.
Connecting through understanding
At my core, I yearn to understand the essence of human experience. When I meet someone, I am less interested in superficial identifiers—such as their car or social status—than I am in their thoughts, passions, and willingness to connect on a deeper level. This desire for genuine connection drives me to engage with others openly, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations.
Reflection and ongoing growth
As I look back on my life, I recognize that each experience, relationship, and moment has contributed to the person I am today. I aim to continue growing, understanding, and connecting with the world around me. Writing remains my passion, a means through which I explore the depths of my thoughts and feelings. My journey is far from over, and I embrace every opportunity to reflect on the beauty and complexity of life.
