Figs can spread leg worms, the larvae of a fungus, from the plant, but it’s a different story when you’re growing them in your home, which is a big deal when you have a child.
A lot of people who grow figs at home have a few children, and the plant grows well with them.
But for many, it’s not a priority to keep them indoors.
But there are some fig growers out there who do have kids in mind.
“I just got a kid and he’s doing pretty well with figs,” says J.R. Hargrove, owner of the popular Floral Park Farm in Brooklyn, New York.
“My son just got his first figs this year and they’re all going very well.”
Hargraves says that he’s trying to encourage his children to grow fig trees, and his fig farm is full of fig trees and their owners.
Haggroves also grows figs and peppers, and he says he loves growing them indoors, but he’s looking at making them available for kids to grow at home.
“The thing that makes me most excited about this is that they’re healthy, so we don’t have to feed them anything,” he says.
“So the idea is that when I have a kid, I can grow them as a fig tree at home and bring them out and enjoy them.”
Haggraves is not the only one who’s looking to bring figs indoors.
In May, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new product called “Pumpkin Figs” that is supposed to be a natural substitute for a food that contains figs.
The product comes in flavors ranging from fruity to savory, with a high concentration of Vitamin C. “They’re great for the diet of young children and they’ve been very well-received in our home,” says Mark D’Angelo, a professor of entomology at Cornell University who has studied figs extensively.
D’Angeli says that it’s possible that children who aren’t allowed to grow food crops could use the supplement as a way to keep up with the growing demand for figs in the United States.
And, he says, the FDA’s approval may encourage more companies to make products that contain natural ingredients that aren’t grown in genetically engineered fields.
“It’s just a great way to give kids some natural, organic food without having to worry about pesticides, fertilizers, or anything like that,” D’Angli says.
It’s also a chance to educate parents about the risks associated with eating genetically engineered foods, especially when it comes to feeding them a genetically engineered product.
“If you’re eating a product that’s genetically engineered to be toxic or to cause cancer or to be harmful to people, that’s not the right way to eat your food,” Dzell says.
For those parents, the decision to plant their children’s fig trees may be one that’s easier to make than making a decision to put them in a cage.
“A lot of parents are hesitant about planting their kids’ figs because they don’t want to be responsible for them or worry about them getting the disease,” Hargreaves says.
The FDA’s announcement about the new product came on the heels of another new product announcement, one that involves an alternative to genetically engineered products that is now available for purchase at retailers.
It came from the Biotech Industry Organization, which recently released its own product called the “Fruit of the Month” that’s made from figs grown in a different way.
The new Fruit of the Year, which has been named the Fruit of The Month for the month of August, is a hybrid of a different strain of fig that has been grown in California, with more than half of the genetic material from the parent plant coming from the state.
According to the Biotechnology Industry Organization website, it “is grown in an environmentally sustainable, and locally-sourced, manner, using an innovative and scalable process that combines high-quality ingredients to yield a new variety of delicious figs.”
And it has an “excellent nutritional profile,” with about half of its ingredients coming from fruit.
The company claims that it can “lower the risk of colorectal cancer, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy gut health” and that it is safe for young children.
The Biotech International Group, the company that made the Fruit and Nut products, has received more than $1.3 million in FDA-approved research funding to study its products, and it says that its products are “the safest, highest-quality products on the market.”
The company also said that it has no plans to sell the Fruit or Nut products in the U.S. because it doesn’t want the FDA to regulate the food.
But that may be changing.
